Back in the early 90’s, The 850 estate was entered into the BTCC. Everyone thought it was a joke and a marketing gimmick and it worked. Volvo wanted to prove that the Swedish company don’t just build super safe cars, but also build cars that has performance. The 90s British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) was the domain for BMW, Audi, and Ford until 1994 when Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) took a P80-chassis 850 Estate and created the Volvo 850 Super Touring Car. The 850 was like any other Volvo; dependable, predictable, and honest. But in 1993 a 2.3 litre 5-cylinder turbocharged engine was added to their rather flavourless line-up, and all of a sudden the 850 sprung into life. The top of the range T-5 got to 60mph in 7.3 seconds, and came in both saloon and estate variants. Launched around the same time Volvo was curb-hopping its Estate version of the 850 in the BTCC (replete with inflatable dog in the cargo area), the T5-R took a page from the Audi RS2 and E500 book and turned to Porsche to up the ante.
